Fascinating. It's a shame they can't have thought-provoking conversations like that in the mainstream media. (Though, there have been other interesting points (like yours) in the non-mainstream-media since Monday.)

I think the video that North Korea released intended to show people grieving over their leader (Master?) when the situation is more complicated than that. Cable news doesn't do complicated.

Thanks for your comment. -JJ

While many Americans, including myself, find it hard to believe that people would revere a man in the way the North Koreans revere their leader(s), apparently those who have spent time in Korea and who have spoken with these people face to face have reason to believe their display of strong emotions pertaining to their leader(s) is genuine.

North Koreans apparently have very different mindsets from most of the world and there is an element on Korean culture which causes the role of leaders to extend to those of father figures. The elder Kim Il exploited this to the point that he had convinced the people that the Korean race was so pure and virtuous that they were innocent and child like and needed to be protected from the world, and he was the protector. Needless to say there was probably some truth to this in that the North Koreans must have been somewhat naive before the war to buy such BS but then again the country had a long history of being exploited by foreign occupiers. Essentially Kim Il did manage to achieve one aspect of Marx's philosophies. Total indoctrination of multiple generations.

[...] I’ve noticed over the years that non-compete agreements have gone from simple protections designed to keep departing employees from taking customers with them, to what’s become elaborate masterpieces of legalese that prevent a departing employee from working in the same industry within a distance of a hundred miles or for up to a year and a half or both. I believe it’s a tactic for keeping salaries down because the employer won’t have to compete with another who might pay their people a little better. My question is, if an employer was really interested in me, could I take their non-compete and start drawing lines through the parts I didn’t like before I signed it? I guess what I’m saying is, are these non-compete/employee agreements negotiable? [...]

I've worked at a place that constantly does this. The have many contractors all over the company and a host of interns too. The pay is fair, and the work not too difficult. They do provide a computer and cubicle. I know they have laid off workers, and replaced them by us contractors.

Basically, I think they are abusing the 1099 statutes, but then they do make sure to tell us we are free to work from home if we like since we are contractors. I don't often take advantage of this though, and neither does anyone else.

It's not the worst job by far, but there sure is no security either.

The world is a funny place, where inappropriate behavior is awarded by wealth and fame on major television networks and those doing good are afterthoughts on local news programs.

I'm always amazed at the number of magazine covers the kids from 16 and Pregnant manage to grace. We are rewarding teenage pregnancy, making these children (because that's what they are) celebrities, when in fact we should be teaching proper birth control and reminding teenagers of the difficulties in raising children at their age.
